Yvette raised an arm against the blast of cold air that met her as the gate to Hoenn’s Safari Zone slowly opened in front of her. The chill only increased her anticipation though, and she marched through the boundary the second the gate finished its ascent with a sharp grin on her face and a Pokéball twirling in her hand.

What treasures awaited her here?

She didn’t have to wait long to find out.

Yvette tossed the Pokéball in the air, calling out the first attack to the Charmeleon it summoned before the red light had even faded away. ”Slash!”

Bunsen charged forward, tearing at the Treecko with vicious claws, only to meet empty air as it flipped out of the way. He immediately tried again with the other hand, but the little gecko easily Detected it and dodged, following up with an Energy Ball to the face for further insult.

Bunsen staggered back, shaking off the attack while his opponent darted around him, leaving afterimages behind with its Double Team. ”Trap it!” The Charmeleon lashed out with his tail, igniting the area around himself and the afterimages with his Fire Spin.

The Treecko slowed down as it failed to find any exits, allowing Bunsen to strike at it again with another Slash, this time knocking it through the flames and out the other side, where Yvette gleefully tossed a Safari Ball at it while the fire died down.

Catching Stantler!
1/3 Safari Balls left!

Not a moment later a Stantler stormed through the underbrush, apparently unhappy with the careless burning of its home, and Lunged at Bunsen with its large horns, the Charmeleon only leaping out of the way only thanks to the leftover adrenaline from the previous fight.

”Round 2 already, huh? Slow it down!” The deer charged towards Bunsen again, but this time was met by a billowing Smokescreen from the lizard’s mouth. Smoke flashed into flame at the corners of his jaw, and the Charmeleon followed with a Fire Fang to the back of the Stantler’s neck. Not tight enough to kill, but enough to make the Pokémon cry in agony as it bucked around wildly until Yvette tossed another Safari ball at it.

She’d add one to her collection eventually, but there was another one on the list inside that had caught her eye…

A Snorunt watched the pair pass through, shivering as it peeked out from its den. It was hard to tell from this distance, but it looked as though it might’ve been female.

”There! That’s the one!”

Bunsen immediately set out on the offensive, whipping his tail around to stop the squirrel in its tracks with a Fire Spin. It turned around to flee in the other direction, but was just as quickly met by another wall of flame.

The Charmeleon closed the distance while it frantically searched for a new escape route, trapping it in his jaws with a well-aimed Fire Fang. Just as the fight seemed over however, the Pachirisu let loose an explosive Thunder, freeing itself and knocking its assailant clean out.

Yvette returned Bunsen with a scowl, summoning her Krookodile in his place before the flames could fade away. It’s close! Don’t let it get away! Their target took the initiative this time, spinning around and unleashing a flurry of Swift stars at Carter, which he dodged with ease as he disappeared into the ground.

There were a few beats of silence while the crocodile stalked his prey from below, until he finally reappeared beneath the Pachirisu, Digging straight up and launching it across the field towards his trainer, who took the opportunity to throw one last triumphant Safari Ball at it.
